What Happened
In January 2026, data allegedly scraped via an Instagram API was published on a prominent hacking forum. The dataset comprised 17 million rows of public Instagram records, including usernames, display names, account IDs, and—in some instances—geolocation data. Notably, 6.2 million of these records included associated email addresses, with a subset also containing phone numbers.
Although the incident coincided temporally with a surge in platform-initiated password reset requests, investigations indicate that the scraped data is unrelated to those requests. There is no evidence suggesting that passwords or other highly sensitive authentication credentials were compromised.
